The latest evidence of this came with the news that Research in Motion’s Blackberry Curve outsold the popular iPhone in the first quarter of 2009. According to NPD the Blackberry Curve benefited from the buy one get one free promotion that Verizon Wireless was offering during the months of February and March. This is one of the main reasons why the Curve smart phone was able to outsell the iPhone in the first quarter. That being said, Research in Motion also has three of the five popular selling smart phones during the same period in addition to the Curve, the Storm and Pearl. According to Research in Motion nearly half of the 25 million subscribers that they do have fall into the category of non corporate.

What this shows is that while the Blackberry Curve has outsold the iPhone in the first quarter, thanks in part to the special that Verizon Wireless was offering, the company is having success in going after the non corporate market. This means that the iPhone could continue to face some serious challenges from Research in Motion as the company continues to innovate and entice non corporate users to switch to one of the company’s different phones.
