In an interview with Oprah Winfrey and in excerpts from a new book, Mrs. Edwards described her shock when John Edwards told her shortly after he announced his presidential candidacy in late 2006 that he had had an affair with Rielle Hunter, who had been making campaign videos for him. Mr. Edwards told her then, she said, that it had lasted just a single night.
